King Kong

The King Kong architects’ partnership, based in Bordeaux, was founded in 1994 by four architects – Paul Marion, Jean-Christophe Masnada, Frédéric Neau and Laurent Portejoie, all graduates of the Bordeaux School of Architecture.

Since its inception, the firm has been commissioned to conduct design and development studies by private and public project managers.

The practice has made its reputation thanks to projects such as:

  • The Château d’Ô amphitheater in Montpellier – a project chosen for the Prix de l’Equerred’Argent2003
  • The redevelopment the PeyBerland square in Bordeaux – the project won the Prix grand public de l’architecture 2004 (urban planning category for Aquitaine)
  • The Seeko’o hotel on the Bordeaux embankment frontage, which won the Prix de la ville de Bordeaux prize in 2008 and was also chosen for the MIPIM Awards the same year

The firm has designed many facilities, including the Astrada performance halls in Marciac, chosen for the architectural Prize (project management support) 2012, and the grand M multimedia library in the Mirail district of Toulouse.

Recently, the firm completed conversion of a major industrial hangar into 14 dwellings in Bordeaux, construction of a villa in the Landes, conversion the former Gaz de Bordeaux HQ into housing and the Mama Shelter hotel (in collaboration with Philippe Starck).

Upcoming projects include: the multimedia library and the Centre for Associations and eco-citizen life in Le Bouscat, construction of an auditorium in Chapel Corneille, Rouen, and the Hip-Hop building – the Euro regional center of urban cultures in Lille.

Incidentally, the King Kong partnershipsuccessfully bid for the Greater Paris station design and development project for the NoisyChamps- Villejuif Louis Aragon section on line 15 South of the Greater Paris Express and will be responsible for designing and completion of Vitry Centre station, in Val-de-Marne.
